Dr. Mitra Ara is a professor and cultural historian at San Francisco State University. She earned her B.A. in Religious Studies, M.A. in South and Southeast Asian Studies, and Ph.D. in Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, with a concentration in Asian religious thought. Her research explores theological, philosophical, and historical ideas, focusing on questions of the divine and ultimate reality, the soul, the afterlife, and salvation. She is particularly interested in how different religious traditions shape philosophical thought while engaging broader questions that transcend cultures and belief systems. In her teaching, she takes a comparative and reflective approach, encouraging students to engage closely with foundational texts, examine intellectual history, and develop critical perspectives. Her courses highlight how religious traditions inform philosophical inquiry and speak to shared human concerns.
