Philosophy Talk Live: Sanctuary Cities with Guest Shelley Wilcox

In the U.S. there are over 500 sanctuary cities—municipalities that limit their cooperation with the federal government’s immigration law enforcement. Although opponents portray sanctuary cities as besieged by crime, empirical data does not support such claims. But what actually justifies sanctuary policies in the first place? Do appeals to public health or safety warrant these measures? Or should lack of cooperation be seen as an act of resistance against unjust federal policies? And how should local municipalities respond to claims that they lack the authority to impede federal immigration enforcement?

Join our live audience at San Francisco State University to record a new episode of Philosophy Talk, the nationally syndicated public radio show. Philosophers Josh Landy and Ken Taylor welcome special guest Shelley Wilcox—philosophy professor at San Francisco State University and author of "How Can Sanctuary Cities Be Justified?" In addition to thought provoking conversation and audience questions, the show will feature Roving Philosophical Reporter Holly McDede, satirist and Sixty Second Philosopher Ian Shoales, and musical guest Tiffany Austin.
