Ram Neta: What is it to think freely?
Friday, January 19, 2018
Ram Neta, professor of philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, presents his paper, What is it to think freely?
Abstract: To think freely is to be the agent of your own thoughts - for those thoughts not merely to be impressed upon you. But how is this contrast between agency and subjection to be understood? Several philosophers (eg Frankfurt, Korsgaard, Moran) have answered this question by appeal to our reflective control over our thoughts, but this answer is widely criticized. In this talk, I defend my own version of the reflective control view, and argue that it avoids all the criticisms that have been leveled against it. Free.
