Eric L. Hutton: Plato, Through Confucian Eyes

Comparisons between Greek and Chinese philosophy usually start by identifying some set of ideas in the Greek texts, and then argue that one can find the same or similar ideas on the Chinese side. Eric L. Hutton, associate professor of philosophy at University of Utah, gives a talk reversing that direction of comparison, by using early Confucian discussions of a "moral charisma" arising from virtue as a lens to examine Plato's works.

Hutton specializes in ancient Chinese and Greek thought with a focus on ethics. His translation Xunzi: The Complete Text was published by Princeton University Press in 2014.
